So I will hate on it before I will love on it.
On this beautiful September morning I was reading the book , Of Poseidon, and realized how much I dislike romantic novels. They are cliché and all of them have mostly the same summary. I am reading this book in another English class so I have to read a gateway book and I noticed that 99% of them are about romance.
It's like chewing the same piece of gum all the time. Yuck.
Any who, Of Poseidon, is a different but the same book. While Galen is head over heels for Emma, he has to fake it to get her to his older brother because she is the last descendant of poseidon (hence the title). While taking her through the steps on teaching her about her unusual power he starts to fall in love.
And this is why I don't like romance novels. They all have the same plot and I can predict perfectly the conclusion.
It goes on with Emma fainting a lot and being extremely stubborn.
The rest of the porch is sucked into a black hole of my vision.
The welcome mat beneath me pitches like a rowboat during
a hurricane. I reach for the door or the wall or Galen, but
somehow I miss all three. Suddenly, my feet are swept out
from under me, and my face smacks into his chest.
for the second time in my life.
Emma is being super nice to Galen and tries to reject him when they both like each other but then she thinks that he is using her and that is the most classic plot of every love story. Then he has to leave to check up with his sea world connections and she gets extremely sad to not have him around all the time. She literally starts feeling bad. Girl, give him a break. You guys are obviously not going to be attached hip to hip all the time. And that is where I left off. I really do hope that it has a big plot twist so I could enjoy this book.
On the bright side the author is extremely descriptive and she is engaging in what she is writing in. Brownie points for that. The author also is really good at catching young, teenage girls in this net of romance that never happens in life, that is why it's on gateways book choice list.

But honestly this book isn't as bad as I am describing it, really. Give it a chance. Maybe you'll like reading about people turning into fish. Whatever floats your boat.
I am glad that you gave some of the negatives and love the analogy of the same piece of chewing gum. I was debating whether or not I would read it but your post made me realize that I would not enjoy it. Thanks for saving me the trouble of finding that out the hard way.
ReplyDeleteYou could give it a shot. Don't go off only by my opinion, because who knows, you might love it.
DeleteI feel almost the exact same a my book. In my book response I also highlighted that I feel that all romance novels are cliché. If you find an alternative to these romance noels you should tell me so I don't have to suffer through anymore.
ReplyDeleteI noticed how similar our responses where. I honestly do not think that there is 'no romance' in a book, because in one way or another the author will make sure to stick it in somewhere. And unless you find a book before me let me know.
DeleteIs this part of a series?
ReplyDeleteApparently, there is a sequel. I hope that it gets better at the end. Finger crossed.
DeleteI like how even though you didn't love the book, you praised the author's descriptions.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteChewing the same piece of gum is very gross.
ReplyDeleteUgh. It's gross.
DeleteI love that even though you didn't like the book you still gave the author credit for the work they had don't!!! Nice Job!
ReplyDeleteI really like your analogy about the gum. :)
ReplyDeleteI liked your comparison between romance novels and chewing gum!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI actually want to read this.! I liked what you did with the gum.
ReplyDeleteI love Sappy stories, So I Cant Wait!
ReplyDeleteI started reading this and I had to stop. It just was not for me
ReplyDeleteI definitely meant the book and not your blog...
ReplyDeleteI'm so tired of all the perfect love stories...I'll be in the middle of a manly book about guns and scars, and then a wild hot chick appears and makes out with the guy for about 3 chapters. Bleh
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with hating romance novels. they are way to predictable!
